On August 17th 2006, our then seven-year-old son, Zachary, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.  The world we knew suddenly and drastically changed as we found ourselves surrounded by doctors, specialists, pharmacists, and dieticians.  Today we measure carbohydrate intake, test blood levels, and inject insulin to stave off the effects of this disease.  The challenges of living with diabetes are many and for now it is a condition we cannot change.  With that in mind our family began to look for the "silver lining" in Zachary's situation and for ways we could help make it better.   

One of the challenges we encountered was in our efforts to keep our young son safe.  We purchased medical ID alert jewellery so that others would be aware of Zachary's condition; however, having him wear these pieces proved difficult.  The medical ID alert jewellery on the market was esthetically outdated, poorly manufactured, uncomfortable to wear, and made Zachary feel that he stood out in a negative way.  We searched for better alternatives but to our dismay none could be found.  Our family decided to take up this challenge, not only for Zachary, but for all those in need of better choices in medical ID alert jewellery. 

The name Silver Lining Jewels developed from the idea of “Every Cloud has a Silver Lining”.  A medical condition puts such a cloud on people having to battle them each day.   We hope that Silver Lining Jewels provides some light to making living with medical conditions easier.
